In the ensuing war, the narrative examines heroism, villainy, and competitiveness vs. Cluny the Scourge and his rats quickly break the tranquility. The abbot tells Matthias that the mice no longer require a protector. Matthias wants to be like Martin the Warrior, who once guarded the woodlanders. Mortimer’s favorite novice is a clumsy mouse named Matthias. The narrative begins at Redwall Abbey, where the residents are preparing a feast to commemorate Abbot Mortimer’s golden jubilee. Matthias the mouse warrior and Cluny the rat warlord narrate most of the story, while several minor characters share their ideas and experiences. The novel’s last chapter takes place one year after the events in June of an indeterminate year. The novel is set in a non-human-populated medieval English countryside.
